Sjogren's Q & A: My mouth is sore and dry, what can I eat?

I love doing these Sjogren's Q and A's as they help answer specific problems that many people with Sjogren's have. This week is about having a sore and dry mouth due to the way that Sjogren's syndrome attacks the salivary glands.

Rockmelon for sore dry mouth

Question: My mouth is sore and dry, what can I eat?

Answer: The pH of saliva varies between 6.0 and 7.4 so foods that share this range may be easier to eat, chew and swallow especially if the mouth is sore or dry. I wonder when you look at the list below if you find this to be true?

The PH scale

This is a list of some foods that are close to neutral pH which is supplied by Fiona Ritchie, Head of Clinical Services, Inspirational Pharma Ltd.

SOUPS: Cream of mushroom soup, cream of asparagus soup, cream of celery soup, clam chowder, corn soup.

VEGETABLES: Cooked asparagus, mushrooms, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, peas.

FRUITS: Honeydew melon, cantaloupe,(also called rockmelon sweet melon, or spanspek), dates, avocado.

CALCIUM FOODS: Milk, tofu, soybean milk, goat's milk, camembert cheese, coconut milk.

GRAINS: Oatmeal, rice, Boston brown bread.

PROTEIN: Crab, bass, egg, mackerel, flounder, haddock, herring, salmon, shrimp.

LEGUMES: Chickpeas, lentils, yellow split peas.

Personally many of these foods are my go-to foods - like oatmeal, scrambled eggs, lentil dhal, tofu and rice and white poached fish.

This is just one part of the answer that may help you in finding some things that do not aggravate your dry mouth when trying to find foods that you can eat.

CREATING A DAILY MENU WITH PH NEUTRAL FOODS

I thought it would be fun to try and create a menu for one day using the foods off this PH neutral list and then check the nutrients to see if we were getting all our daily requirements.

BREAKFAST: Oatmeal (half a cup) with soy milk.

SNACK: Camembert cheese (1 oz).

LUNCH: Cream of mushroom soup, made with skim milk and water, with added cooked mushrooms and Boston brown bread and hummus as a spread.

SNACK: Melon and 4 dates.

DINNER: Salmon, asparagus, half a cup of basmati rice and peas.

According to Cronometer, this menu supplied more than the required nutrients in all vitamins and minerals except calcium which was 94% and 1594 calories and over 100% of protein required for me, a 66-year-old woman.
