What to do about nasal dryness in sjogren's syndrome

We did a survey in May on our Sjogren's blog Facebook page asking Do You get dryness inside the nose? 116 people responded and all of them said YES.

So following are some tips to help both at home and with the doctor.

Nasal dryness tips in Sjogren's syndrome

HOME REMEDIES FOR DRY NOSE (from Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation):

Measure the humidity in your home with a simple humidistat. An optimal range of humidity for Sjogren's is between 55% and 60% regardless of the surrounding temperature.

Try a bedroom humidifier, which generally comes in two types. While more expensive, a self sterilizing unit is ideal in that it continuously sterilizes and cleans the steam prior to admitting it into the air. A more modestly-priced humidifier is adequate but must be cleaned at least twice a week to limit the possibility of circulating fungus in the air.

Remember that alcohol and smoke have a drying effect. Even secondhand smoke has now been shown to contribute to nasal irritation.

Use over-the-counter nasal drops and saline spray regularly (as often as every hour) to lubricate the nasal passages.

Over-the-counter gels work like sprays but last longer and are useful at night prior to going to sleep.

DISCUSSING DRY NOSE WITH YOUR DOCTOR:

Salagen and Evoxac are prescription medications that help with dry mouth, and they may benefit if you have dry nose and dry sinuses. Discuss them with your doctor the next time you are there.
Also ask your doctor or pharmacist if any of the meds you are on, such as decongestants or antihistamines, are drying  are causing the extra dryness you are experiencing in your nose.

My suggestion is to try a small pack first to see if you like the brand.
